Well, here’s the second set of the return to Innistrad (although that was almost in-name-only, it turns out). I’m fresh back from a disappointing pre-release where I pulled a stack of hot garbage and built a deck that played like cotton candy against opponents sending tanks to my face. But never mind that, we’re here to see which of the cards from Eldritch Moon have a shot in Modern format.
As always, I leave out everything but the cards worth mentioning. Do you really need me to tell you that Vaporkin – oops, I mean Tattered Haunter – doesn’t have potential in the format? I don’t want to write it and you don’t want to read it. If I leave it off the list, I’m pretty sure it won’t show up in the format.
My rating rules: (2-5) means relative expected strength and chance that it will show up in the format. A (1?) means a card that I’m completely uncertain of. This might be a budget substitute for an established card, a possible combo piece, a great card for a currently non-existing deck, or something that the format has simply never seen before. It’s anybody’s guess!
EmrakulThePromisedEnd
Emrakul, the Promised End – (3) – Hoo boy, this could be a budget substitute for Emrakul classic in Tron! It’s not as effective to Worst Fears your opponent instead of a Time Walk for yourself, but this is a potentially far cheaper casting cost for Eldrazi beef that’s just as good.
EternalScourge
Eternal Scourge – (1?) – Yet another dude who can be cast from exile! Exile is just becoming the new graveyard, an extension of your hand rather than the place where cards are gone forever. This guy isn’t impressive at all, being otherwise a 3/3 for 3 with no buffs, but its pesky ability to dodge spot removal and keep returning could make it very annoying to deal with. It will lie dormant until somebody discovers its purpose.
ExtricatorOfSin
Extricator of Sin – (2) – This is very comparable to Blade Splicer, which is part of Death & Taxes / Hatebear type builds. The requirement to sacrifice a permanent could be turned into an upside (Ichor Wellspring?), or just not be a big deal. Flipping over into a 3/5 instead of being a 1/1 is worth some consideration, but Blade Splicer is more valued for its bounce value. Delirium is stupid easy to turn on in Modern, the format that brought you the turn-two Treasure Cruise, so 6 power across two bodies for 3 mana just sounds good for any kind of deck.
LoneRider
Lone Rider – (1?) – Obviously the only deck I have in mind is Soul Sisters (aka Martyr Life). True, it could trigger the flip off Siege Rhino, but Modern Junk is so crammed with crazy stuff already that I can’t see it taking a spot there. And I haven’t heard about Soul Sisters in years, maybe I’m the only one who remembers that deck.
ThaliaHereticCathar
Thalia, Heretic Cathar – (4) – Did somebody say Death & Taxes / Hatebears? For 3 mana you get a firsties 3/2 with a variation of Blind Obedience stapled to it. Scoff all you want, but I’m at least going to test it out.

CoaxFromTheBlindEternities
Coax from the Blind Eternities – (2) – Tron and Eldrazi strategies have been spoiled rotten for the past few sets, and now we have a Glittering Wish for Eldrazi. OK, we get it, Eldrazi are the Master Race and the rest of us should line up for the gas chamber. Now can we give somebody else some love for a couple sets?
CuriousHomunculus
Curious Homunculus – (1?) – Could be something Storm wants? Or perhaps Grixis Control could tolerate another 2-drop beside Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy and Snapcaster Mage? This is one of those unique cards I’m talking about; mana-dorks in mono-blue are rare, let alone one that flips into a Goblin Electromancer on steroids.
SummaryDismissal
Summary Dismissal – (2) – Might show up in UWR Control sideboards. Good combo hoser, lousy at everything else.

Unsubstantiate
Unsubstantiate – (3) – Currently, the closest things we have to playable 2-mana counters in Modern are Remand, Mana Leak, and maybe Deprive. This is a decent tempo counter that has possibilities, since it can also catch a permanent after that permanent resolves.
SuccumbToTemptation
Succumb to Temptation – (3) – I almost thought black was just going to be shut out of Modern this set. But hey, draw two instant speed, anybody notice that?

VoldarenPariah
Voldaren Pariah – (1?) – If this shows up in Modern at all, it will be to bring back mono-black The Gate style decks. Triple black madness cost and an instant-speed flip; you could do this with zombie tokens, and it can hose linear aggro strategies when it does. Zombie Infestation in your opening hand gets you there easy.
WhispersOfEmrakul
Whispers of Emrakul – (1?) – Hey, this card is trying hard to be Hymn to Tourach, don’t you think? Does Modern want that? 8Rack maybe, but they’ll need to dig 8Rack back up and bring it back to life first.

BedlamReveler
Bedlam Reveler – (big fat 0!) – There’s been a lot of hype about this card and I pulled it at pre-release. If you have one, sell it now. It’s too cumbersome regardless of how many instants and sorceries you cast, because you’re always holding this damn thing. When it’s out, it’s a Vanilla 3/4. Don’t tell me it has prowess, that text is blank; you already spent all your instants and sorceries to get this derp out, remember? Don’t tell me it draws you three cards either, because what you will draw is two more Bedlam Revelers and a land. It has no haste, nor evasion, nor anything else that makes it good in combat. A potato that made you jump through six hoops to cast it is still a potato.
HarmlessOffering
Harmless Offering – (1?) – Look out, because Modern is about to get Donate. In red, yet. What will we do with it? God only knows; you’ll have to reel through thirteen years of set releases just to gather a short list. But somebody out there is doing that right now, so if they find anything, we’ll know when it breaks Modern.
OtherworldlyOutburst
Otherworldly Outburst – (5!) – I already gibbered about Skin Invasion last set, and it still hasn’t shown up anywhere, and now this. So let me say it more plainly: A 3/2 FOR R IS NUTS! SO IS A 3/4 FOR R! It doesn’t matter how you trigger it; it’s worth jumping through hoops for. Stick it on your opponent’s creature before you Bolt it – you were going to do that anyway, why not get a 3/2 out of it? What, is this not worth a card?
SavageAlliance
Savage Alliance – (2) – For a total of 4 mana, you’ve got 3 damage on one dude and 1 to all the others. It’s like a Shock and Electrickery stapled together. Versatile enough, since mode one will usually be ignored.
EldritchEvolution
Eldritch Evolution – (5) – Everybody’s already buzzing about this, and it does indeed appear to be yet another Birthing Pod substitute. Even as a one-shot, it’s cheaper than a Pod activation and can fetch out a bigger card. Notice the casting cost requirement does say “or less,” unlike Pod, meaning you could feasibly sac a Kitchen Finks to it to bring out another one. The only snag is that Modern green-based decks are already so spoiled rotten with Collective Company that there may not even be a slot for this.
GnarlwoodDryad
Gnarlwood Dryad – (1?) – Again, there’s just one thing stopping this from showing up in Modern Zoo: Zoo is spoiled rotten already. But if your Zoo is a little heavy on the burn, this could be a feasible substitute until your Wild Nacatl playset ships.

SplendidReclamation
Splendid Reclamation – (1?) – Ha ha ha, green gets to do what now? In this age of sixteen fetchlands per deck, this could be next to useless, because then there’s nothing to fetch. But it’s got a splashy casting cost that makes a combo awfully easy to engineer. Scapeshift players could at least stand to look at it.
SpellQueller
Spell Queller – (3) – Been some buzz about this one, too. Flash and flying 2/3 for 3 all by itself is about playable. The ability can target uncounterable spells, as well as your own spells, by the way. Restoration Angel blinks this. Think about it for awhile.

LupinePrototype
Lupine Prototype – (1?) – There’s three scenarios where this card could have use: In 8Rack, and yes I know it clashes with Ensnaring Bridge – have you tried thinking about 8Rack without Bridge? The other is as a sideboard against linear aggro deck like Affinity and Zoo, which barf their whole hand on the playmat by turn two anyway. And another – you knew this was coming – is in Affinity or Zoo itself, because… the text also applies to you, the player.

GeierReachSanitarium
Geier Reach Sanitarium – (3) – Finally, we have a symmetrical Desolate Lighthouse that can run in any deck. This might prove to be the set sleeper. One of those cards that creep into one decklist after another until you look up one day and half the format’s running it.

Yeah, Modern for this set isn’t a sure bet with anything, but has lots of shrugs and maybes. As far as Modern goes, this block revisiting Innistrad has just sucked. The only major entry into Modern in recent memory was the Eldrazi, and they had to ban that immediately. Compare to the first Innistrad block, which represents a hefty chunk of the format just by weight.
