Big Brother 18 Season Premier Thoughts first words WHAT THE OMG LOL!!

Okay yes I started out with WHAT THE OMG LOL! Well that is my thoughts on this season so far. Now people I already do not like and want out of the Big Brother house are

1. Victor ! Why annoying talks about sex and girls in every other word he speaks out of his mouth in the diary room! Annoying to be honest and thinks he is all that NOT SORRY he is not IMO! He lives at home with mom and his mother still makes his meals does his laundry and he works at a Gym okay thats good he has a job but he still lives at home having his mother do everything which IMO is not good learn some independents and learn some kind of cooking and learning how to do your own laundry from time to time..

This is my song to Victor :) yes something new I am going to try to do lol my husband had the idea :)

Na na na hey hey goodbye :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoyvvEWHodk

2. Jozea another one who thinks he is all that but in a different way. He has an attitude that is just out there now this is just my opinion and what I am seeing so far from him. He thinks yet again he is gods gift to the world basically everyone to. This song fits him IMO HA HA!!

I touch myself
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoLI9FHmV90

3. Ma Ma D omg why did they bring her back I am sorry she is losing it again didn't learn anything from the first time around in the house and she is acting like this already REALLY? Just not happening for me. Okay sure she maybe a nice  person outside the house and great mom though she does not belong in the Big Brother house.

Big Girls Don't Cry in her case she has lost it sorry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8yvnqHmFds

4. Paul he is okay but feels he needs to be in control of everything and A thats not good to do right away in the house people will notice specially how he is doing it and that will make him a target soon to be evicted out of the house.

For Paul here my song for him is Beat it which he needs to just beat it out of that Big Brother house ha ha ha omg lol!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRdxUFDoQe0&list=PLYagrqIg-kgSsqwwac-o_1Vcwqtkag6Hg

My likes so far are Glenn okay he is 50 yrs old I am 48 so what lol but he is having a hard time in the house I see that already to. He had a hard time getting on the rocket last night which wasn't good and keeps getting frustrated well I can see why though at the same time he needs to settle a bit because if he doesn't he will be out soon to.

Bridgette OMG love her she is fun have to say that as well as I like Tiffany Vanessa sister she seems fun. I like Cody's brother Paulie so far and I do like Frank his hair looks better and he is right he has grown up since the last season he was on. I am also glad to see James back to he so deserves another try at this IMO. Though I am not glad Mama D is back to much and Nicole I like her but really not sure about her right now either to be honest..

I am sharing a few links of reviews people did on the show and will share the links but wanted to give my thoughts for today and will do another update since the its a two night premier and tonight I think someone goes home.

On that note may you all have a wonderful day or evening where ever in the world you may live. May you be kind and just smile at people even the ones not so nice just smile go on and know your happy.

Big Brother 18

'Big Brother 18' Predictions: Who Will Go Home First?
'Big Brother 18' Predictions: Who Will Go Home First?
John Kubicek
John Kubicek
Senior Writer, BuddyTV
It's only the second episode of Big Brother 18, but one HG is already going home. After a series of new twists, a competition will decide the fate of one player who will not get to spend the rest of the summer in the house. It's not unlike season 14, when Jodi Rollins was unceremoniously evicted after just eight hours in the house (though at least her name is now a verb, because someone is getting Jodi'ed).

Big Brother 18 Premiere Recap: New Twists and Comps>>

In the Big Brother 18 premiere, the 12 new HGs and four returning players were split into four teams. Team Unicorn (James, Victor, Natalie and Bronte) was the first competition and are therefore immune not only from Thursday's eviction, but from next week's second eviction as well.

However, the losing team, the Freakazoids (Nicole, Corey, Tiffany and Glenn) came up short. After losing the first three competitions of the season, the four team members will compete against in each other on Thursday's episode, with the loser being immediately evicted.

The good news is that the other three will get to choose one of them to become the first HoH of the season, most likely resulting in all of them being safe. With Team Unicorn safe as well, that only leaves eight HGs in real danger of being nominated and evicted in second place.

Everything You Need to Know About the BB18 Returning Players>>

But first they must survive the competition. Based on this promo for the second episode, this last competition appears to involve climbing a palm tree on a wobbly platform, so there's definitely a big physical component. Here's how they stack up.

Corey: The last man standing in the first competition, he's tall, athletic and coordinated (he's a baseball coach). I can't imagine he'd be bad at this comp, unless his massive height is a disadvantage.

Nicole: The veteran player proved in season 16 that she could win mental and skill-based competitions. And since she outlasted Tiffany and Glenn on the rocket, she could probably survive a physical competition as well. Her willingness to give up all of her clothes and dye her hair pink in week 1 just to stay proves that she's willing to do what it takes.

Tiffany: My pre-season pick to win, Tiffany really botched the first episode. She was as paranoid as her sister Vanessa and got schooled by Michelle in their conversation where she was forced to reveal her family connection. And let's not forget that Tiffany was the first person to fall of the rocket out of all four teams. If nerves get the better of her, I could imagine a scenario where the pressure of living up to her sister causes her to crash and burn, sending her out the door right away.

Glenn: Without a doubt he's the clear frontrunner to lose the competition and get evicted. He's bigger and older than everyone else in the house by a large margin. He just doesn't quite fit and he was the last person picked for a team, just like Jodi in season 14. Sure he was the only person on his team who saw what they were doing wrong with the sandcastle puzzle, but I'm not sure climbing palm tree.

The choice is almost too clear and obvious. Big Brother's motto is "Expect the Unexpected," which is the only thing helping Glenn since him being out first is the very definition of expected at this point.

But all hope is not lost. This year the first evicted HGs will not be doing phone interviews with the press, just e-mail interviews. That's usually reserved for jury members, meaning it's possible that one of the first few people to get evicted could get a second chance to come back, something they also did in seasons 3, 6, 9 and 13.

That theory makes even more sense since the long season requires a few extra twists along the way if someone is going home in the premiere. This basically leaves us with only 15 HGs, and if we get two double evictions and one returning player, the show still has to fill two more weeks. Those two weeks could include a rewind/reset (like season 14, maybe an eviction will be cancelled when the teams are over) and we could even see TWO players get to come back into the house.

So if someone like Nicole or Tiffany gets evicted in the premiere, there's at least a glimmer of hope that they might get another shot and come back. Or not. With four competitions and three twists in the first two nights, anything is possible this season.

Big Brother 18 airs Thursdays at 9pm, Sundays at 8pm and Wednesdays at 8pm on CBS.

Big Brother 18' Premiere Recap: The Longest Summer Begins

'Big Brother 18' Premiere Recap: The Longest Summer Begins
John Kubicek
John Kubicek
Senior Writer, BuddyTV
Welcome back, Big Brother fans! It's time for another summer of competitions, alliances, showmances, paranoia, frustration and twists. Big Brother 18 is finally here for the longest season ever, lasting 99 days.

I'll be here for every single one of them, posting recaps, spoilers and updates from the 24/7 live feeds. Tonight is all about the first day as the 12 new HGs are introduced and move in. But with four "mystery guests" and new twists on the horizon, we had better expect the unexpected. The one good thing we can expect: no Battle of the Block.

BUT FIRST...this is my Big Brother 18 premiere live blog!

Julie Chen promises us a bumpy ride and a crazy summer vacation. Right away we learn that these two nights will have four competitions, three twists and someone is getting Jodi'ed, meaning there's gonna be an eviction tonight or tomorrow! There are also four stowaways in the house.

Meet the New HGs

Natalie: She's a former cheerleader and an event coordinator. She makes dreams come true.

Paulie: He's Cody Calafiore's brother and doesn't wear a shirt in his intro. Neither does Cody.

Bronte: She's a squeaky-voiced math tutor who's also a stereotypical Cali girl. But she's also a runner and dancer.

Victor: This New Orleans gym manager is also shirtless and a Latin dancer...for the ladies. But he lives at home with his parents! RED FLAG!

Zakiyah: She's a gun-toting pre-school teacher who's also a bad bitch that thinks the other females will be intimidated by her.

Corey: He's a baseball coach who sleepwalks.

Glenn: He's a 50-year-old from the Bronx who went from an NYPD narcotics officer to a dog groomer. He says "Bronx" about a dozen times in his intro.

Bridgette: She's a soft-spoken traveling nurse who likes to surf. BOR-ING!

Jozea: He's a celebrity make-up artist who was a go-go dancer in Miami. He's "too much flavor."

Michelle: This dietician watches what everyone eats and hates obesity. She's scared of being kidnapped, aliens, North Korea and more.

Paul: He's a rock 'n' roll clothing designer with a big beard and tons of tattoos.

Tiffany: She's Vanessa Rousso's sister and seeing Vanessa gives me PTSD. She's a genius, but more social than her sister. Like her sister, she's dated men and women.

Moving In

Natalie, Victor, Michelle and Paul go in first. Natalie is way too peppy. Michelle likes that Paul is a little different, but she's scared of his beard. Victor is into Natalie because she's a sexy Latina and goes full telenovela. Paul yells and gloats that he's crazy and will run over this house like Godzilla.

Bronte, Zakiyah, Paulie and Glenn are next. Paul's ears are laughing at Bronte's voice. Zakiyah is instantly in love with Paulie.

Corey, Tiffany, Birdgette and Jozea enter last. Bridgette is happy. Tiffany is already in gamebot mode, stalking her prey. Bronte is overwhelmed and hides in the bathroom to find her zen.

Introductions

Bronte is first to lie about her job, saying she's in childcare and not an aspiring mathematician who wants to help the CIA fight terrorism with prime numbers. Victor is in love with Natalie, but she's in love with Corey. And Corey wants a bromance with Victor. LOVE TRIANGLE!

Paul thinks Zakiyah is hot. Paulie thinks Paul is too loud and obnoxious, so he's going home first. Michelle tells everyone that she'll cook healthy meals for everyone. Everyone likes Glenn, except Jozea who throws shade at him.

Paulie and Tiffany don't tell people who their siblings are yet, but Michelle sees the Tiffany/Vanessa connection right away.

The Four Mystery Guests

Julie gathers the HGs to reveal the first of three big twists. There are four stowaways in the house who will be entering as regular players.

Everything You Need to Know about the BB18 Returning HGs>>

The first one is Nicole Franzel from season 16. She pops out of a suitcase. Paulie is worried because his brother took her out. She's single and playing for herself. Victor leads the anti-vet charge.

The second is James Huling from season 17, also popping out of a suitcase. Bridgette thinks he's gonna be a lot of fun. His eye is on the prize.

The third guest is Da'Vonne Rogers, also from season 17. James is worried that Mama Day is a firecracker who might target him. Paul says she'll be lucky to last two weeks this time.

The final stowaway is season 14's Frank Eudy. He got a haircut and looks less silly. Michelle likes that he's a trustworthy fighter and underdog.

Mama Day is already struggling to be nice. Jozea, Paul and Zakiyah meet up to trash talk the vets and form an instant alliance. Meanwhile, the vets agree to team up. Da'Vonne is smart to use the fact that some people are fans and they can use that.

Once everyone is together, Paulie decides to come clean about being Cody's brother. This immediately makes Paul hate him. Tiffany is freaking out, because now she thinks she needs to reveal her secret too, especially since Mama Day knows EXACTLY who she is. But Da'Vonne is keeping it a secret for now.

The Team Twist

Julie reveals the second twist: Everyone is playing the game in teams of four! But she doesn't explain any of it. People are upset, but Tiffany sees the benefit in working with others.

The four returning players are on different teams and get to pick their teams. So it's the coaches twist all over again, sort of. But the person they pick gets to pick the next HG on their team. They must also pick someone of the opposite sex.

Frank picks Michelle
Da'Vonne picks Paul
James picks Natalie
Nicole picks Corey

Corey picks Tiffany
Natalie picks Victor
Paul picks Zakiyah
Michelle picks Paulie

Paulie picks Bridgette
Zakiyah picks Jozea
Victor picks Bronte
Tiffany picks Glenn

Bronte and Glenn were last to be picked. Meanwhile, the anti-vet alliance of Paul, Jozea and Zakiyah is with Da'Vonne.

So the teams are:

-Frank, Michelle, Paulie and Bridgette
-Da'Vonne, Paul, Zakiyah, and Jozea
-James, Natalie, Victor and Bronte
-Nicole, Corey, Tiffany and Glenn

The First Competition

There are four giant rockets in the backyard. At stake are cash, punishments and safety. Each team climbs on a rocket and holds on. When all four members fall, they're out.

The first team out will be Have-Nots!
The second team out will get a mystery punishment!
The third team out will get $10,000!
The fourth team out will get immunity for everyone for the next TWO evictions.

And Julie warns that the first eviction will take place tomorrow night.

James' head is right in Natalie's butt, which is kind of awkward. Eventually there's rain. Tiffany is first off, followed by Glenn and Nicole. Just like that, Corey is the only person left for his team.

Michelle, Bridgette and Frank are down next, leaving just Paulie for his team.

Da'Vonne and Zakiyah fall as the rocket turns. Then Paul goes.

So it's Corey vs. Jozea vs. Paulie vs. all of Team James. Jozea falls and his team loses.

Team Da'Vonne (with Paul, Jozea and Zakiyah) are Have-Nots!

James drops, followed by Natalie and Bronte. It's Victor vs. Corey vs. Paulie. BRO BATTLE!

Paulie drops.

Team Frank (with Michelle, Paulie and Bridgette) get a mystery punishment!

It's a 6'5'' warrior in Corey vs. the Puerto Rican Sensation, Victor. Corey drops!

Team Nicole (with Corey, Tiffany and Glenn) win $10,000!

Team James (with Natalie, Victor and Bronte) win immunity for two evictions!

Victor did great, but I'm not wild about the other three getting safety. They seem like filler and floaters who are gonna coast.

The Game Begins

After the comp, Zakiyah rallies all of the newbies against the "old heads." They even bring up season 13, when the newbies were divided and let the veterans win. Da'Vonne tries to get her team to like her by promising to keep the vets from targeting them if they keep her safe. Her team doesn't care at all.

Team Names

Victor rallies his team to come up with a name. They start with Cavalry, then become Team Unicorn.

Paulie comes up with Category 4, like a hurricane, for him, Frank, Michelle and Bridgette.

Nicole, Corey, Tiffany and Glenn are the Freakazoids.

Jozea pitches Big Sister for him, Da'Vonne, Paul and Zakiyah.

Tiffany asks Michelle if she's related to Nicole (paranoia is strong in the Rousso family). She's not and Michelle turns it around because she knows Tiffany is Vanessa's sister. They agree to keep it a secret and Michelle hopes to use her to go far.

The "Hit the Road" Competition

The three teams that aren't safe will compete in a series of three challenges. The winning team of round 1 is safe. The other two teams will do battle in round 2 and the winner is also safe.

In the last round, the final team members will compete against each other. The loser will be eliminated right away. However, the remaining three will pick one of them to be the first HoH, so it's a risk/reward scenario.

Now the backyard is a beach. For round 1, the teams must build a 15-piece pyramid puzzle. Three members will hold ropes to suspend a platform while one person digs for a piece and puts it on. Then they must switch so someone else gets a piece and so on. Any pieces that fall are out.

Big Sister's castle drops and so does Category 4's. Da'Vonne and Paul are at odds and clearly hate each other. The Freakazoids get frozen when they're one away. And then they lose all of their blocks.

Category 4 wins! Frank, Paulie, Michelle and Bridgette are SAFE!

Corey and Nicole have a bond while Da'Vonne freaks out because she's stuck with her crappy team that she hates.

For round 2 it's Big Sister vs. Freakazoids. This time they must solve a puzzle as a group, but there are decoy pieces that won't fit. Glenn tries to tell people something is wrong, but his team doesn't respect him. As usual, Da'Vonne and Paul are fighting for dominance.

The Freakazoids finish first, but they're wrong. They need to fix the base, which is exactly what Glenn was saying. Big Sister finishes, but they're wrong too. The cream and speckled windows have to line up. Paul flips it in one move.

Big Sister wins! Da'Vonne, Paul, Zakiyah and Jozea are SAFE!

Wow, I didn't expect that. They hated each other so much. This means Nicole, Corey, Glenn or Tiffany will be eliminated first. Glenn seems like the obvious odd man out, though Tiffany did fall first in that endurance competition.

Tomorrow night we'll find out which member of the Freakazoids gets eliminated right away and which one becomes the first HoH. We'll also get our first nominations as Sunday will feature a new competition where one player can change the game.

Will Glenn, the odd man out and the oldest by fire, just go home right away? Will Nicole blow her second shot and get eliminated? Will Vanessa Rousso's sister somehow be eliminated? Or will Corey...do or say anything interesting?

Magic: The Gathering Eternal Masters – Did WotC Finally Do Something Right?

Okay here is some more fun for you magic friends that follow me here. My husband wrote this up so I hope you enjoy . Be kind to one another and may your day be awesome or night where ever in the world you may live.

Eternal_Masters
“Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded.” — common MTG axiom
The new Magic: The Gathering reprint set just dropped and nobody’s happy. Heck, even I’m not happy. But my unhappiness is a meta-unhappiness. While others are unhappy for not pulling a foil Jace, The Mind Sculptor out of every pack (they’re entitled to it; it’s stamped on their birth certificate), I’m more unhappy because the state of MTG has just turned into such a financial MESS. I can’t blame WotC any more. If you hired me as CEO of Hasbro tomorrow, I don’t know how I’d solve the economic problems of Magic either.

Here, in Eternal Masters, is a set with nothing but good intentions behind it!

Unlike Modern Masters parts I & II, Eternal Masters is a set chock full of actual playable cards that are format staples across the game. Rarities have been dropped, just to make some cards more attainable. I concede, this set is the absolute maximum they could have done to make eternal formats accessible without just breaking the game, and it’s not going to be enough. It will STILL cost thousands of dollars to compete in anything but Pauper.

Yeah, sure, prices on box value look impressive now. Rest assured, the inevitable paradox will kick in – if you print a set with reliable profit per box, that will just drive prices for the boxes to the point where you can’t possibly make money opening them, and drive down prices on the cards in the set by a couple bucks. After the limited set run is reached, leaving 90% of the people who missed out high and dry, prices will climb back above their previous points and stay there.

The problem with MTG is that it’s locked in an inflationary bubble. Will it ever pop??? It hasn’t in the past two decades now. So many old cards keep their price memory when they’re now played absolutely nowhere. So many cards inflate insanely in value and just stay up there. And it doesn’t matter if WotC reprints cards until their bulk matches the sun, they’ll still stay expensive.

I’ve formulated two rules of MTG:

  1. Anything you try to do to please players will backfire.
  2. Any action which is projected to lower card prices will actually have no effect.
I’ve never seen either law break yet. And yet, for a game that everybody does nothing but complain about, cards just keep doubling in price and everybody keeps spending money on them. I can remember when cards used to drop their price when they rotated out of Standard. Well, during every Standard rotation that does apply to one or two cards, significantly, but anything these days that’s good enough to be a powerhouse in Standard will likely have an equal footing in other formats.

Anyway, back to the set at hand…

Eternal Masters: It’s not just for Legacy

They might as well call this set “Commander Masters,” because Commander, as I’m seeing, has become nothing but Legacy-Lite. Just about every card that’s a Legacy staple in this set also qualifies as at least a Commander playable. There’s a smattering of legendaries here. There’s also some interesting news for Pauper, as the good professor will explain:

No kidding, here’s the complete IMGUR gallery of newly Pauper-ized reprints.

So to wrap up: Ignore expectations of profit or loss. Eternal Masters is a decent set where within a few packs you can shell some sweet pulls that are likely to be playable in one format or another. Likely as not, you’ll at least have a fatter trade binder, because even if you don’t care beans for Goblin Charbelcher, somebody out there has a fever to trade into it.

If you can get your hands on a few packs before they’re sold out, that is.

My Pet Deck In Hearthstone– Thunderball: Midrange Shaman

For all you Hearthstone fans here is one for you so enjoy may your day be awesome and great where ever in the world you may live!! Smile and be kind to one another its always refreshing :)

Shaman_Midrange
Lately the Hearthstone meta has turned into a stew of slow, grindy, midrange decks that care not for winning or losing as long as they can make the game last for eight hours. In such a quagmire of trolls, the only way to fight fire is with lightning.

Shaman is the class that’s good at removing obstacles while keeping the pressure on. It can tempo and tango. It can cut through the mud of 7/9 taunts and durdly spot removal, while delivering surgical strikes of damage. And it’s also easy to build as a budget deck, without needing legendaries. So to Shaman it was, with the deck I call ‘Thunderball’:

Yes, it is named after the James Bond movie, but hold on – we have a theme song just for this deck:

Yeah, that’s the Johnny Cash version of the Thunderball theme, which was rejected for the movie in favor of the more traditional take. But don’t the lyrics fit perfectly for playing a deck full of burn damage? “Who is going to suffer for the power in your hand?” I’m sorry, but my man Johnny here did it right, not that gauzy music they went with. I discovered this song during my old gig as blogger / editor for a hip music website. Bet you didn’t know that part of my former life.

Sir Finley

Totems suck. They’re random, so you never get the one you need. While lots of Shaman players embrace totems – your humble author even posted a totem-centric decklist way back when he started Heartstone – this deck doesn’t really want to cast any except as a last resort. Meanwhile, Sir Finley gives us access to abilities like Life Tap (the sooner to drop Flamewreathed Faceless, my dear!), Shapeshift (devastating when you have Doomhammer equipped), or Fireblast for good, solid board control or damage ping. Those are the three I usually try to pick anyway.

Tunnel Trogg and Unbound Elemental

Troggy-dog is a given, and yet his big cousin Unbound Elemental just doesn’t get any love. Try him out, he gets flippin’ HUGE! Not only is Elemental a nice complement to Faceless, but it makes a great backup finisher when the opponent kills off Faceless.

Ancestral Knowledge vs. Mana Tide Toem

The problem with Mana Tide Totem is that everybody picks it off immediately, so the most you get off it is one card. Ancestral Knowledge gets you two cards right now and triggers Trogg and Elemental.

Flamewreathed Faceless

Isn’t it silly how everybody rages about this card? Oh, boo hoo, there’s a budget beatstick that can come out turn four and wreck my plans of making the game last 30 turns until I can drop my Yogg-Saron, Hope’s End and watch it blow itself up for nothing! Yeah, playing for an hour just to have the whole game come down to an RNG coin flip is the fun part! The people I see whining about Faceless are the same people who paid out the wazoo to have a gilded fancy all-legendary expensive deck.
hammy_heroes

In other Hearthstone News:

IGN caught up with a couple of Hearthstone’s game designers for a Q&A on the state of the game and where things might be headed. The forums have strongly reacted to one statement, however, where the developers say they haven’t been hearing many complaints about how Arena mode works. The online consensus seems to be that we need to complain more about Arena.

And really, what is it about Arena? In a digital card game where it’s not feasible to open packs together and wheel them around the table in draft, Arena is the next best substitute. It’s supposed to be a format where everybody starts the same, so a newbie can keep pace with the seasoned expert no matter what cards in their collection. Yet the complain is just the opposite – that it’s impossible for a newbie to draft well in Arena because it takes experience to know what to pick. Yes, but… what other level of competition could we give it? Have a bot pick for you? There’s tons of Arena guides out there, and it takes very little practice to understand the pace and strategy.

I dunno, I just think some of you kids don’t appreciate what you’ve got.

Meh, well, I’m outta mana. Til next turn…

5 movies Hollywood got right about Hackers

Five best movies to do with hackers and what the true word means not what most think it is either. Hacker the word IMO gets so overly used the wrong way when some folks have no idea what it truly means .

5 movies Hollywood got right about Hackers

Hollywood gets hacking wrong; nobody is surprised at it anymore. The movie industry figured out quickly that realistic depictions of computer hacking, like any hard science, is boring to watch, so they spiced it up. Now we have Matrix-style green Unicode rain scrolling down the screen and CSI techs babbling about making a GUI interface with Visual Basic to track the killer’s IP address. Doubtless from a “Sam’s Teach Yourself…” guide.
night-television-tv-theme-machines
When it came to trying to find realistic hacking in movies, we had to give up. It’s not that we don’t have any writers who understand technology; it’s that audiences just won’t sit still watching anything more involving than a flash of copy-pasted code on a screen to say “computer things are happening here.”
So this list is instead the top five movies which capture the spirit of hacking, in the truest possible Jargon-file definition.
As you’ll see, the movies that do this best sometimes don’t even touch a computer.

1. Sneakers

This 1992 classic makes the top of the list mostly for being a hysterically fun flick with an all-star cast. A team of rag-tag misfit security consultants gets mixed up with an international intrigue over a master-decryption rig. The trailer makes it seem a lot more action-packed than it really is; it’s actually more of a cozy cyber-mystery. There’s a clever puzzle to unravel in every other scene, while we watch some extremely clever people play a global game of cat and mouse. It’s funny, witty, and far under-appreciated today.
It’s also eerily prescient: There really are teams of security experts who stage mock-penetration attempts to find holes in systems; the Jargon file calls them “Tiger Teams,” but we know them today as simply “white-hat security consultants.” This was one of the first movies to look ahead to our modern-day concerns over the NSA and encryption years before we had Julian Assange and Edward Snowden. Ben Kingsley’s line saying modern warfare being about who controls the information rather than the bombs rings true today. Indeed, the recent news story about the FBI trying to strong-arm Apple into supplying them with a backdoor to bypass iPhone encryption just goes to show how valuable the “black box” of this story would be.

2. Catch Me If You Can

Here in this 2002 Academy Award nominator, we see a movie which captures the hacker ethos on so many levels without ever once showing a computer. It’s even set in a time before computers were commonplace. It’s a fairly faithful biopic of the real-life con artist Frank Abagnale, and how he was caught. Mr. Abagnale, today working as a security consultant and lecturer for the FBI as well as heading a financial fraud consultancy firm, oversaw the film’s production.
It’s also chock-full of hacker tropes, which just goes to show that you don’t have to use a computer to find holes in the system. Frank Abagnale starts out exploiting holes in the international banking system to kite bad checks; he graduates to posing as a number of professional characters mostly by lying to everybody he meets. He’s repeatedly cornered and caught by his FBI pursuer, but keeps getting away. Meanwhile Tom Hanks as the FBI investigator hot on his tail shows us that catching a con artists involves just as much psychology as technology. We get to see the brilliant deductions that tell him that his target is a kid from New York based on his choices of fake names and his wisecracks about the Yankees baseball team. Ask any banker – the stuff about MICR and Federal Reserve float periods is very accurate, although modern day systems have since plugged some of these holes. As for Abagnale’s adventures, most security experts – of either color hat – will tell you that the biggest vulnerability in any system is still to find a young, gullible intern who will believe any lie.

3. The Conversation

This 1974 Francis Ford Coppola flick is probably the pick that everyone least expected. There are two people in the world who agree that this is a science fiction movie (at least by 1974 standards): one of them is author Harlen Ellison and the other is your humble blogger.
Gene Hackman plays a security consultant – a “bugger” as he is described – who snoops on a conversation. As he screens the resulting tape, filtering out background noise to tease out the words, he uncovers a government conspiracy with deadly consequences. His character is obsessed with technology details and his work, but maintains a huge blind spot when it comes to dealing with people.
There it is right in the trailer: “a world where nothing is private.” Well, hello again, Julian Assange and Edward Snowden! What were you doing back in 1974? While once again we have a hacker movie without computers, there is no shortage of techno-babble in this movie. Sound engineering and phone “phreaking” technology are thoroughly explored. We even see a collection of “spooks,” as the parlance of the times would call them, attending a convention where they explain some of the cutting-edge spying technology of the era. The Watergate scandal was still unfolding in the newspapers at this time; this movie was practically ripped from the headlines even before Richard Nixon resigned. While computers were yet on the horizon, technology was already a growing source of paranoia about the ways privacy could be invaded. You need only imagine gene Hackman’s character as a computer forensics engineer in the modern-day NSA, and it would all ring true today almost without changing any other details.

4. Pi

This was director Darren Aronofsky’s 1998 debut indie film, and it’s a mind-blower today. So far it is the single entry in the category of “mathematical thrillers.” The movie tells the story of “Max,” a mathematician obsessed with penetrating the mysteries of nature using mathematical patterns. Max is also in far less than peak psychological health, and his quest takes him to the brink of madness and beyond. No end of protagonists are out to invade Max’s privacy and exploit his findings for their own gain. The movie is a treat for its techno-pop soundtrack, acidic high-contrast photography, and psychedelic scenes. (NOTE: We know, there’s a mathematical error in the script. Yes, you couldn’t have time since the beginning of the universe to intone every 216-digit number. Max was bluffing there.)
It’s also a movie about the true hacker spirit because it’s a big valentine to all the hacker preoccupations. Max lives in a hacker den; he’s all but merged with the giant system of computers which takes over every square inch of his apartment. The movie is pure love of math through and through; if you mean “STEM career intellectual” when you say “hacker,” look for a copy of Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid on the hacker’s bookshelf. Max’s character is practically cut and pasted from the Jargon file’s appendix on hacker personalities: paranoid, insecure, antisocial, disdainful of modern society, and living only to understand the secrets of the world. If you’re a computer expert and you can’t empathize with the sickening but obsessive fascination Max feels when he’s penetrating the boundaries of science, you’re probably in the wrong line of work.

5. WarGames

We just can’t leave this 1983 classic off the list, even though it’s about as realistic as The Matrix when it comes to hacking depictions. Matthew Broderick and a pre-brat-pack Ally Sheedy start out with the old “hack into the school computer to change your grade” routine – already a tired joke in 1983 – and end up jacked into the national defense system, where they almost start WWIII while playing a video game. In retrospect, they should have picked “checkers” from the game menu instead. The rest of the film is, as reviewer Leonard Maltin put it, “Fail Safe for the Pac-Man Generation,” as the whole US government scrambles to stop a buggy AI from launching global nuclear war. And sound effects straight out of a Galaga arcade machine.
“This computer is totally secure… or is it?” While this movie might be justified only as the scapegoat for bad Hollywood hacking cliches, it gets onto the list for being the great grand-daddy of all bad Hollywood hacking cliches ever since. Watch this movie again, and you’ll see that Hollywood never moved a step past 1983 when it came to computer hacking. Nevertheless, it is culturally significant for capturing the spirit of the times; this movie forms a bridge between the Cold War world and the modern day. It came about right at the dawn of the home computer age. By 1984, modems were selling off the shelf at the Radio Shack at the mall and Americans began getting Compuserve accounts. No less than then-president Ronald Reagan saw the movie and was inspired by it to enact new cyber-security laws; it would be he, with his plea to Soviet leader Gorbachev to “tear down this wall,” which would end the Cold War era and plunge us into the international scene we have today, where it’s all about the cyberpunk terrorists.

In conclusion…

Why is it so hard for the film industry to understand the computer industry? We’ll grant that it’s more entertaining to watch CGI battleships whizzing around than it is to see a CISCO tech pop open a Blade server and start shuffling circuit boards around. But still, even where getting the simplest detail right wouldn’t detract from the entertainment value, film writers just seem to insert gratuitous errors out of pure laziness and even a little spite. It seems to be the case that the hacker, like the cowboy and the caveman, is doomed to be a stereotype cut-out figure when it comes to the media. Culture falls in love with the romanticized illusion while caring nothing for the realistic substance.
Break time’s over, everybody get back to your Visual Basic GUIs! The weather forecast for tonight is cyberpunk with a chance of raining green Unicode characters.
What do you think? Did we miss any Hacker movies on our list? Let us know in the comments!

When Pac-Man Ate Quarters

How Arcade Games helped shape today’s tech

Why sonny, your old gramps might tell you as you try to concentrate on leveling your warlock in World of Warcraft, when I was your age we didn’t have no fancy game consoles. We had to walk all the way uphill barefoot in the snow to the arcade to play video games – and pay a quarter each game for the privilege! When color displays came out, we about fell over in shock.
How to convey the culture of the arcades of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s? Video game arcades at one point spread to every other street corner in every major city. You can still find the token few games at a movie theater or the beach-side pier Fun Zone right by the skee-ball lanes, but the landmark movement has definitely died down. At their peak, video game arcades looked and sounded like this:
Rather than being an accessory to pizza or miniature golf as they are today, arcades were an actual outing in themselves. You got together with friends, grabbed snacks at the snack bar, and cashed out a $20 bill in quarters for a few hours of play. Especially in the 1980s, arcade games kept the public interest in computing high, at a time when the moon landing was old news and home computing was yet limited to a few college students chatting over Compuserve.

Arcade Games Pushed Technology Forward

Dedicated arcade cabinet machines at the time simply blew away anything on the home market when it came to graphics and sound. However, they were limited in processing power. Since games had to be enticing enough to spend money for them on the spot and bring gamers back for repeated plays, games had no choice but to be inventive and creative in game design. Unlike games of today, they also weren’t afraid to be difficult. Even impossible. Most games gave you three lives, and if you lost them all in the first minute trying to clear the first room and had to spend another quarter, so much the better.
But throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, arcade games had an arms race over the cutting edge of technology. Vector display, the RGB color standard, continuous background sound, speech synthesis, laserdisk video, and 3-D graphics all got their commercial start in arcade games.
And yes, the infamous Pac-Man popularized the maze game genre. In fact, you can trace almost any game genre back to this time period: Pole Position for racing games, Donkey Kong for platform games, Gauntlet for top-down dungeon crawling, and so on. But getting back to Pac-Man, 1982 saw the Billboard Hot-100 hit “Pac-Man Fever,” a song that would get its artists Buckner & Garcia about fourteen and a half minutes of fame.
That’s how big arcade games were in 1982. There was a hit song about a video game and nobody thought there was anything geeky about that. That same year, then-president Ronald Reagan sent a letter of congratulations to an eight-year-old for breaking the record high score at Pac-Man. Citation right here.
As today, arcade video games also responded to popular culture in other media. So when a movie got big, an arcade game was sure to follow. The original Star Wars arcade game is barely recognizable today (I’m shooting flowers?), but the Tron series looked much more true to form. Then there was the music crossovers, such as Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker…
Yes, that happened. Because why not fight off an army of golden robots and switchblade hooligans by dancing them to death to the tune of “Billie Jean”?
Of course, many video game producers and franchises you recognize today got their start in the golden arcade age, notably Sega and Nintendo. This is the lineage of Mario in the arcade: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong, Jr. Donkey Kong 3, Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers. After that Mario jumped to the console, and in fact one of the key selling points of the NES was that Super Mario Brothers looked, sounded, and played identically to its arcade cousin, such that a free copy of SMB was distributed with each console sold.

How To Recreate This Era Today

If these reminiscences have made you misty-eyed with nostalgia, recovering the golden age of the arcade is actually a lot easier than you’d think. There’s a thriving culture of hobbyists who auction, trade, and refurbish arcade game cabinets of every variety.
First off is the long-running MAME project . MAME is the “multiple arcade machine emulator” and through the use of “ROMS,” which is to say software dump from circuit boards, one can feed just about any arcade game ever made to a desktop computer and try to make the keyboard interface work with the game controls. Easy-peasy with Pac-Man. Nigh impossible with Spy Hunter.

When you really want to know how a civilization was feeling, look at what they did to amuse themselves.

MAME is available for multiple platforms, but if even that’s too high a commitment for you, head on over to the Internet Archive where they host a live MAME set-up and multiple video game ROMS right there on site, playable in your web browser.
A word on ROMs: Most arcade-era video games fall legally into the gray, slushy area of copyright law known as “abandonware.” That is, whoever made the game hasn’t responded to any contact nor been heard from in years, so it’s almost like public domain. Peppered through the arcade cabinet ROM scene are a handful of companies that viciously protect their copyrights, even on a dusty old platform game that nobody’s wanted to play in four decades. Tread carefully.
Now then, for the full cabinet experience, The Internet Arcade Museum is the main hub for cabinet hobbyists. Not only does the museum include “Videogame and Arcade Preservation Society,” but they’re a 501c nonprofit to boot, making the preservation of video game history into an act of commonwealth. Basement carpenters are eager to welcome you into the fold of arcade cabinet restorers. Here’s just a few videos:
As you might gather, the average restoration story runs to picking up the hardware and cabinet on eBay or Craigslist for $200 to $600 and up, then crafting it into a modern playable machine. It’s not only surprisingly accessible, but even pretty affordable for middle-class garage carpenters.

In Conclusion…

It is very fitting that preserving arcade game history is a recognized public service to the point of being a 501C. Video games are dismissed by the serious arts, and yet as an entertainment culture they tell a deeper, more interactive story of the zeitgeist than any other medium. We have now had several generations weened on video games, from the arcade to the desktop to the console to the tablet and phone. Our games are our history, plain and simple. When you really want to know how a civilization was feeling, look at what they did to amuse themselves
