Magic The Gathering, Trading Card Games
“Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded.” — common MTG axiom
The new Magic: The Gathering reprint set just dropped and nobody’s
happy. Heck, even I’m not happy. But my unhappiness is a
meta-unhappiness. While others are unhappy for not pulling a foil Jace, The Mind Sculptor
out of every pack (they’re entitled to it; it’s stamped on their birth
certificate), I’m more unhappy because the state of MTG has just turned
into such a financial MESS. I can’t blame WotC any
more. If you hired me as CEO of Hasbro tomorrow, I don’t know how I’d
solve the economic problems of Magic either. Here, in Eternal Masters, is a set with nothing but good intentions behind it!
Unlike Modern Masters parts I & II, Eternal Masters is a set chock full of actual playable cards that are format staples across the game. Rarities have been dropped, just to make some cards more attainable. I concede, this set is the absolute maximum they could have done to make eternal formats accessible without just breaking the game, and it’s not going to be enough. It will STILL cost thousands of dollars to compete in anything but Pauper.
Yeah, sure, prices on box value look impressive now. Rest assured, the inevitable paradox will kick in – if you print a set with reliable profit per box, that will just drive prices for the boxes to the point where you can’t possibly make money opening them, and drive down prices on the cards in the set by a couple bucks. After the limited set run is reached, leaving 90% of the people who missed out high and dry, prices will climb back above their previous points and stay there.
The problem with MTG is that it’s locked in an inflationary bubble. Will it ever pop??? It hasn’t in the past two decades now. So many old cards keep their price memory when they’re now played absolutely nowhere. So many cards inflate insanely in value and just stay up there. And it doesn’t matter if WotC reprints cards until their bulk matches the sun, they’ll still stay expensive.
I’ve formulated two rules of MTG:
- Anything you try to do to please players will backfire.
- Any action which is projected to lower card prices will actually have no effect.
Anyway, back to the set at hand…
Eternal Masters: It’s not just for Legacy
They might as well call this set “Commander Masters,” because Commander, as I’m seeing, has become nothing but Legacy-Lite. Just about every card that’s a Legacy staple in this set also qualifies as at least a Commander playable. There’s a smattering of legendaries here. There’s also some interesting news for Pauper, as the good professor will explain:
No kidding, here’s the complete IMGUR gallery of newly Pauper-ized reprints.
So to wrap up: Ignore expectations of profit or loss. Eternal Masters is a decent set where within a few packs you can shell some sweet pulls that are likely to be playable in one format or another. Likely as not, you’ll at least have a fatter trade binder, because even if you don’t care beans for Goblin Charbelcher, somebody out there has a fever to trade into it.
If you can get your hands on a few packs before they’re sold out, that is.
